Gourmandise
If one of your resolutions is to eat healthier this year, check out Lorna Sass’ new book “Whole Grains for Busy People” (Clarkson Potter, $19.95).
You’ll find 125 recipes that focus on quick-cooking whole grains — that take 30 minutes or less to cook — as well as the array of whole grain products now found in grocery stores.
For example, Moroccan Spiced Beef Burgers with Harissa and (whole wheat) Couscous takes about 20 minutes to cook; Fruity-Nutty Wild Rice and Turkey Salad takes about 10 and you can use ham or chicken instead of turkey.
We all know that we should be eating more whole grains but that can be a challenge, especially on a busy weeknight. This book makes it easy.
Smart clipping
If another of your resolutions is to save money on grocery shopping in 2009, you may be interested in these four ways to maximize coupon savings at the supermarket.
They come from the Simmons Market Research Bureau. Because of the economic downturn, coupon usage is expected to increase dramatically this year.
1. Use coupons for your entire meal, course by course. Manufacturers’ coupons are offered for many products: soup, frozen entrees, breads and desserts.
2. Look for double or triple coupon deals.
3. Only use coupons on sale items to save the most money.
4. If possible, “stack” your coupons. Combine a manufacturer’s coupon that you’ve clipped from the paper with a store-specific coupon. It can almost be like getting something for nothing.
Beyond PB&J
If you’d like to encourage your children to eat healthier, too, you might be interested in a new recipe contest, called “Everybody Eats Lunch” open to kids ages 7 to 12. It’s being sponsored by the Web site MeetMeAtTheCorner.org, aimed at home-schooled children.
The contest challenges children to develop their own lunch recipe, hot or cold, a unique formula or an interpretation of one seen elsewhere. Ingredients and directions on how to prepare the recipe must be included and entries must be postmarked by Jan. 31.
Four winners will receive an autographed copy of Cricket Azima’s book, “Everybody Eats Lunch,” and a one-year subscription to Kiwi magazine. The winners will be announced next month and recipes will be featured on video podcasts. Only one entry is allowed per person. For more information go to www.everybodyeatslunchcontest.com.
Quotable …
“Overweight is one of Americas’s major health problems; I think that is because we love our food too little, not too much. If it tastes fabulous, if every bite delights, if we really pay attention, we will end up eating less, not to deprive ourselves, but because we will be satisfied.”
— Cookbook writer Barbara Kafka
