- Lewiston Village Pub & Wing Co. gives look and feel of England

- An English pub in Lewiston? “You’ll love the place,” my friend promised me. Having experienced English pubs while visiting England, I was a bit reluctant to get overly excited about one on this side of the Atlantic. But, to my pleasant surprise, this new Lewiston spot did not disappoint. In fact, except for the large-screen televisions — featuring a repeat of a Yankees game, a women’s slow-pitch softball game and a NASCAR race — I felt bloody well at home. Why?

- The door at Cappelli’s Pizzeria opens onto a counter that looks like a busy take-out joint, with a counter and a visible kitchen in which staffers assemble and bake pies at a furious rate. But keep walking past the counter, and you will enter a bright dining room full of comfy booths and tables with quick and efficient table service. That’s where Ruth, Dan, John and I settled in for dinner on a recent Saturday.

- I know a lot of people love Tom’s Diner, tucked into a storefront on Lockport’s Main Street. I’ve heard from some of them, and a lot of people were enjoying breakfast while we were there. While our four meals were mostly good, there were a few issues.

- Havana House is probably the first upscale Cuban restaurant in the area. It has been open for a couple of months or so in the building that once housed Osaka and Vado Pazzo. It is under the same ownership as an adjoining bar called Sangria — you can reach Sangria through its own entrance or through the restaurant itself.

- There are a lot of good restaurants in Western New York, but only a few have been given the four-star rating that labels them “extraordinary” in the opinion of News Restaurant Reviewer Janice Okun. In fact, Janice has only given a four-star rating to three restaurants since July 2007. With Janice off this week, we’re taking the opportunity to look back at those three restaurants with condensed versions of her reviews. Bon appetit!

- Londa’s Diner has a fairly low profile in its plaza with a thrift store. Or maybe it’s the unusual hours — this place serves only breakfast and lunch Sunday through Wednesday, adding dinners Thursday through Saturday.
