BATAVIA– Batavia Downs Gaming is the new name for the pioneer trotting track better known for its video lottery terminals.

The name change – from casino to gaming – is required under the pact reached by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the Seneca Nation that forbids racetracks to use casino where the Indians have exclusive rights to gaming. Western New York has three full-fledged Seneca casinos.

Buffalo Raceway and the Finger Lakes thoroughbred track cannot use casino although the six other racinos in the state can.

Erasing the banned work from thousands of items – billboards, flags fluttering over the entrance, promotional items and newspaper and TV advertising – will take some time and the state wants it done quickly to placate the Senecas after years of fruitless discussions over sharing their casino revenues.

The Downs installed VLTs, similar to slot machines, eight years ago and later added the name casino, which is not correct since casinos have table games like poker and blackjack, which are not available at the Downs.
