Maryland-Baltimore County senior defender Ethan Murphy, a West Seneca East graduate, earned United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Scholar All-America honors as well as America East Conference All-Academic honors for the second straight season. The political science major boasts a 3.78 grade-point average.
Murphy finished second on the Retrievers this past season in ground balls (52, a single-season personal high) and ended his career with 117. He also caused 16 turnovers.
The two-time team captain represented UMBC in the USILA/LAXWORLD North-South Division I/II game in May and also traveled with the team during a trip to Japan this past month in which UMBC won all six games it played.
Murphy will attend the University at Buffalo law school in the fall.
Peter Maduri and Kaylee Hart were presented Classic Bowler of the Year Awards at the annual meeting of the Tonawandas USBC Association earlier this month. Maduri averaged 239 during the 2012-13 season. Senior Bowler of the Year honors went to John Culverwell Jr. and Cindy Carroll, who had the high average (230) among women. Cody Regian was honored in the 180-210 average division and Adam Berg in the 179-and-lower division. Among the women, Kathey Toney was honored in the 180-200 division while Danita Harrison took the honors for 179 and lower. Richard J. Saulter was honored as Youth Bowler of the Year. Danita Harrison, Sue Reinke, Wende Gane and Jim Russo were re-elected to 3-year terms to the board of directors. The Association also announced that $3,460 was raised in its Ninth Annual Bowl for the Cure event at Manor Lanes II. Equal donations of $1,730 were made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
BASKETBALL: The program at Williamsville East has limited openings for its night camp. It will run from 6-8 p.m. at Williamsville East High School on July 15-18 and Session II will be July 29 to Aug. 1. The cost is $60 per session or $110 for both.
