Cathy Fabiatos, principal of Pine Valley Junior-Senior High School, was selected Saturday morning at a special board meeting as the new superintendent of the Holland Central School District.

“I look forward to making contributions that will benefit students and the entire community.”

Fabiatos was a small-business owner until January 2001, when she became a business teacher in West Seneca and Fredonia.

Later that year, she became the School to Work coordinator and business teacher for Pine Valley High School. She has served as its junior/senior principal since 2007.

A graduate of Houghton College and Canisius College, Fabiatos also participated in the New York State Superintendent Development Program at Oswego State College.

Interim Superintendent Sylvia Root, who has served in that capacity for almost a year, stepped in after former Superintendent Dennis Johnson and the School Board came to an agreement last July that hastened his departure by six months.

His contract was set to expire in January. At the time, Johnson was compensated $77,154, which included payment for unused vacation, sick time and personal days.

School Board President Steven Marom said that the field of candidates for the post numbered 20 at the outset of the processbut that Fabiatos became a favorite with the board and community panels once the interviewing process narrowed to three final candidates.

“Ms. Fabiatos will be a wonderful asset to our school district. Her professional background and track record of improving student performance will serve our students well. We are excited about her drive, her positive outlook, her leadership style and her record of achievement,” Marom said.

Fabiatos, a Hamburg resident, will officially take the reins July 22, becoming the Holland Central School District’s third superintendent in a decade..
