Parents need to make education a priority

This is in response to Donn Esmonde’s June 16 commentary about socioeconomic effects on education. He chose to emphasize the economic.

By far the most important factor in how well a student will do in school is how much his or her parents value education. Any other factor is a distant second.

Money cannot make up for parents who do not promote education. Money cannot make up for parents who do not encourage their children to do their homework. Money cannot make up for parents who do not put their children to bed for a good night’s sleep. Money cannot make up for parents who do not keep a quiet home for their children to study. So let’s stop lying to ourselves.

These are social issues. I’m sure comparing students’ academic accomplishments and parents’ commitment to their children’s education would correlate much more closely and even help explain differences within socioeconomic strata.
