George P. Ziemer Sr., of Clarence, a retired financial executive, died Monday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a short illness. He was 79.
A Buffalo native, Mr. Ziemer graduated from Canisius High School. He received a bachelors’ degree in accounting from Canisius College in 1955.
He served in the Army Reserve from 1951 to 1960.
Mr. Ziemer was employed by following companies and contractors during his 50-plus years as a controller or financial executive: Dunlop, Stimm Associates, Furnco, Herbert F. Darling, Higgins Erectors and URS Greiner.
He retired in 2005, then went to work part time at Lowe’s. He retired from the home improvement store in 2010.
Mr. Ziemer was an active member and past president of the Rotary Club of Buffalo and was a Paul Harris Award recipient. He was past president of Financial Executives International, St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute and Buffalo Academy of Sacred Heart Parents Guild.
He was a Eucharistic minister and lector at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Clarence.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, the former Sandra Dunn; a daughter, Heidi Bamford; and a son, George P. Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Harris Hill Road and Main Street, Clarence, after prayers at 9:15 a.m. in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Amherst.
