Hazel Menzie Whalen, a retired pharmacist and dedicated community member, died Wednesday in Fox Run, Orchard Park, after a short illness. She was 87.
A lifetime Buffalo-area resident, Ms. Whalen was a graduate of Williamsville High School and the University of Buffalo’s School of Pharmacy. She was a career pharmacist, who worked for 60 years until retiring at age 80 in 2006. She worked for the Western New York Children’s Psychiatric Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Town and Country Pharmacy and Tile Pharmacy.
Ms. Whalen was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church, where she volunteered as a receptionist and Sunday school teacher from 1995 to 2005. She also was an active volunteer for the Lancaster Public Library, Lancaster Opera House and Niagara Frontier Radio Reading service.
Ms. Whalen was an avid traveler and visited six continents.
Her husband, John “Jack” Whalen, died in 1971.
Survivors include a daughter, Wendy Greenspan; two sons, Guy and Christopher; and a brother, Raymond Menzie.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Calvary Episcopal Church, 20 Milton St., Williamsville.
