Joe Basil Chevrolet has been named the No. 1 Chevrolet dealer in the country for May, beating the sales of more than 3,000 other dealerships.
The family-owned business in Depew sold 566 vehicles – 418 new and 148 used – in May, winning the dealership the top spot for the first time ever in the monthly competition.
The competition is based on the volume of new cars and trucks sold nationally, and Jim Basil, the dealership’s owner, spent Monday fielding phone calls of congratulations from competitors. The No. 2 spot went to a dealership in Georgia that was about 30 units under Basil’s 418 new vehicles sold, Basil said.
Basil attributes the success to 29 years worth of hard work and commitment to customers, good deals and great value.
“It’s a whole team effort from the Service Department to the Sales Department,” Basil said. “For us to be No. 1 in the country – that’s a testament to Western New York and to the dealership.”
The dealership, which opened in 1984 with only eight employees, now employs more than 200 people and has tripled in size in the last 12 years, according to Basil. For the last eight years, the dealership has been in the Top 10 dealerships nationwide.
In September, Paddock Chevrolet in Kenmore received the same recognition, also for the first time in that dealership’s history, for selling 410 units.
Basil Chevrolet’s previous best was 505 new and used vehicles. In the past, it had achieved second- and third-place rankings.
Basil said he was elated and thankful to Western New Yorkers for enabling the dealership to earn the No. 1 spot. He noted that 60 percent of his customers are repeat purchasers at his dealership.
The success was not limited to the Chevrolet dealership, he added, as the entire Basil family of dealerships had record months and sold about 1,800 new and used cars.
