Erie County Legislature Majority Leader Thomas J. Mazur announced Friday that he will not run for another term.

The Cheektowaga Democrat has served two stints in the Legislature from 1988 to 1993 and from 2006 to the present.

“I love public service, but I think it’s time to exercise a self-imposed term limit,” Mazur said in a statement.

Mazur also served two four-year terms on the Cheektowaga Town Board.

“Actually, my whole life has been about service – starting out in the county clerk’s office immediately upon being honorably discharged from the United States Army, which included combat duty in Vietnam,” Mazur added. “Yes, it’s been a long run of service.”

Mazur said he started his political life as a Democratic committeeman in Cheektowaga in 1991, and while he will be leaving office at the end of the year, he won’t stop being civic-minded.

“I’ve always been involved in the community, so I’m not going to shy away from politics,” he said in a brief phone interview Friday.

Among his volunteer efforts, Mazur said he will continue to serve as a pastoral care minister at Erie County Medical Center, as well as on the board at Autism Services. He said he also plans to continue serving on the Legislature’s VALER4Valor Committee, which addresses veterans’ issues.

While Mazur would not speculate on who would be likely to succeed him in the Legislature’s 7th District, former Cheektowaga Town Board Member Richard A. Zydel has already announced his bid for the seat.

“In light of today’s announcement that my legislator and friend, Tom Mazur, will be stepping down from the Erie County Legislature at the end of the year, I thought it would be appropriate to acknowledge his decades of service to the community we all live in,” Zydel said in a statement issued shortly after Mazur’s announcement.

Zydel, a longtime Democratic committeeman in Cheektowaga, has worked as a contract detention officer at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia and also has served as a volunteer firefighter with the Doyle Hose Company.
