Eden reaches softball finals

Today’s the day in which the area’s top softball teams will vie for Section VI championships in five classifications – highlighted by a championship tripleheader at West Seneca’s Sunshine Park with games slated for 3 p.m. (Class A), 4 p.m. (Class AA) and 5 p.m. (Class B).

At Jamestown High School, the Class C (Frewsburg vs. Cassadaga Valley) and D (Forestville vs. Pine Valley) finals will be at 3 and 5 p.m., respectively.

In West Seneca, the Class B state qualifier will bring together a pair of sectional champions in Class B-1 champ Eden and B-2 winner Falconer. The Raiders of Eden advanced with Wednesday’s 6-5 triumph over The News’ No. 1 Small School Depew in which winning pitcher Jill Murray struck out 15 batters – including the final hitter to quell a Wildcats rally. They had trimmed a three-run deficit to one. Falconer beat Roy-Hart, 8-4, for the B-2 title.

In Class AA, defending state champion Clarence faces Lancaster, which handed the Red Devils one of their two losses for the season in late April. The Class A final features Hamburg against Starpoint.

NT’s LeMars advance in tennis

At the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, North Tonawanda’s doubles team of brothers John and Andrew LeMar entered the second day of the state tournament in the winner’s bracket, following a first-round 6-1, 6-0 win.

Section VI’s three singles and other two doubles teams all lost in the first round.
