FREDONIA – A fire that destroyed two buildings Monday afternoon at the Hills Trucking Inc. on Webster Road in the Town of Pomfret was ruled caused by a battery or electrical system short circuit in a semi-tractor trailer that had been moved inside the company’s mechanical garage for repair, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s fire investigators ruled Tuesday.

The fire caused explosions to propane tanks stored inside the garage and took about 100 firefighters from 16 companies nearly two hours to control. It began about 30 minutes after the semi was moved into the garage. Employees heard noises coming from the garage, saw the semi on fire on called 911. Before fire crews could start operations to deal with the fire a steady wind caused the fire to ignite tires and fuel.

The fire, ruled accidental, caused no injuries.
