SYRACUSE — Buffalo came up with another big inning Wednesday to earn a 4-3 victory over the Syracuse Chiefs in the first game of their International League doubleheader at NBT Bank Stadium.
The Bisons also won the nightcap when Ryan Goins’ two-out single in the top of the eighth inning produced a 5-4 victory.
The Herd had scored five times in the eighth inning to win Monday night’s series opener over the Chiefs. A four-run frame did the job in Wednesday’s opener.
The Bisons did all the damage after the first two batters were retired in the top of the fifth inning. Jim Negrych singled to extend his hit string to eight games. Two more singles, two walks and a two-run single by Ryan Langerhans completed the four-run explosion.
Buffalo starter Justin Germano no-hit the Chiefs for four innings of the first game. After giving up a leadoff single to Chris Marrero, he got through the fifth with the help of a sparkling stop at third base by Lance Zawadzki. In the sixth, however, Germano tired, giving up three runs before reliever Neil Wagner came on and got Jimmy Van Ostrand to hit into a double play. Wagner set the Chiefs down in the ninth for his second save.
In the second game, Mauro Gomez hit his third home run in the series to pull the Bisons into a 3-3 tie in the third. Goins scored on a passed ball to put Buffalo in front, 4-3, in the fourth but Syracuse scored against reliever Brad Lincoln in the bottom of the sixth to tie it again. The run came home on an odd play. Jerad Head scored from third on Will Rhymes’ sacrifice fly to center before Jeff Howell was thrown out at third.
Buffalo goes for a sweep of the four-game series today (Radio 1520 AM, noon).
