Myopic groups don’t see violence wrought by guns

According to the March 22 News, the National Rifle Association’s affiliate in New York is filing a lawsuit against the NY SAFE Act, claiming violations of the Second Amendment and interstate commerce protections. The group is willing to take it to the Supreme Court, if necessary.

Lost in people’s anger is an uncompromising attitude and their complete nonchalance over daily violence and murder using handguns and assault weapons with unlimited rounds. Since the December Newtown massacre of children and their teachers, guns have killed more than 2,500 American citizens. This is more than half the number of our military killed in Iraq, depressing as those 10-year numbers are. Equally depressing, those figures matter little to the NRA leaders or their allies in Congress. Were it up to me, we would, legally, do away with the outdated Second Amendment altogether and make gun ownership a privilege, not a right.

It’s ironic, if not the height of hypocrisy, that these gun groups sit on their hands in stone-cold silence while the party they depend on and support gradually and insidiously eliminates voting rights of minorities, as well as women’s very legal and quite personal rights to control their own bodies. In Michigan, democracy itself is under the “gun.” Where’s their outrage at those violations to our Constitution?

I fear we will witness more Newtowns, Auroras and Tucsons. Yet nothing short of tragedy in their own families will improve the vision of these myopic groups.
