Civilized society needs sensible gun regulations

I am puzzled by the refusal of too many to recognize the need for sensible gun legislation. Surely, we can all agree that universal background checks are reasonable. I should not be able to buy guns at a gun show with no background check. I should not be able to buy mass quantities of ammunition on the Internet.

Armed guards in schools, teachers with concealed weapons, magazines that can allow someone to shoot you 30 times in a matter of seconds, people afraid that we need military-style weapons to protect our homes from criminals – I’m afraid we’re becoming a Third World country.

How will history judge us? We have the chance to make a difference, to embrace New York’s progressive gun legislation. No one is coming to get your guns. This is not about the Second Amendment; this is about creating a safer environment for all of us.
