The Buffalo Junior Sabres secured their first Ontario Junior Hockey League division title Saturday night with an 8-2 win at Orangeville.
With the win, Buffalo captured the West Division title, its first division crown since 1993-94 when the team was known as the Niagara Scenics and played in the North American Hockey League. The Junior Sabres also secured the top seed for the duration of the South-West Conference playoffs.
Buffalo will open the playoffs at 7:50 Monday night at the Northtown Center at Amherst against the Burlington Cougars in a best-of-seven series.
Teams will alternate home dates throughout the series with the Cougars hosting Game Two at 5 p.m. Tuesday and the Junior Sabres hosting Game Three at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Northtown Center. Game Four is Saturday night at 8 in Burlington. The dates for Games Five-Seven have yet to be announced. Tickets cost $7 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens.
On Saturday, Buffalo scored the first eight goals of the game and goalie Parker Gahagen stopped 30 of 31 shots before giving way to backup Bobby Bloomfield for the final 14:11.
Tyler Gjurich, Pat Egan and Dylan Howlatt each had a goal and two assists during the win, while Sean Federow and Max Mikowski each had a goal and an assist. Nolan Sheeran, Nick Scamurra and Tim Kielich also scored in the win for the Junior Sabres (38-12-5), whose 81 points edged second-place Georgetown by a point for the division.
