The commissioner of the state Department of Environmental Conservation next month will meet with environmental groups and residents dealing with pollution issues in the Town of Tonawanda and Buffalo’s West Side.

A March 15 visit by Commissioner Joseph Martens was confirmed after Tuesday’s release of a state Health Department data review that found elevated cancer rates and birth defects among people living in and near the town’s industrial corridor.

According to Erin Heaney, executive director of the Clean Air Coalition of Western New York, Martens called her last August, when the DEC announced it would install air monitoring near the Peace Bridge on Buffalo’s West Side, and said he would visit. The coalition sent multiple follow-up letters, Heaney said, leading to an e-mail Wednesday from the commissioner’s secretary that confirmed it.
