Bonnies hosting Fordham; Bulls return home

News Staff Reports

Story tools:

No Atlantic 10 team has fared worse than Fordham since the Bronx university joined the conference in 1995. The Rams have an all-time record of 65-168 in A-10 games, a .278 winning percentage.

Against St. Bonaventure, though, it's a different matter.

Fordham (2-19, 0-9 Atlantic 10) will be looking for its fifth straight victory in the Reilly Center when it visits tonight (7 p.m., Radio 1450 AM, 95.7 FM). The Rams have won eight of the last nine in the series against the Bonnies.

It's been a season of turmoil in the Bronx this winter. Coach Dereck Whittenburg was dismissed after a 1-4 start and Jio Fontan, the A-10 Freshman of the Year last season, left the team. Jared Grasso is interim coach of a team that starts three freshmen and a sophomore.

St. Bonaventure will be trying to break a four-game losing streak. Fordham has lost its last 14.

At Alumni Arena, the University at Buffalo (12-9, 5-5 Mid-American Conference) will open a three-game homestand against Eastern Michigan (7 p.m., Radio 1230 AM). The Bulls are coming off their first-ever victory at Toledo (65-59) last Saturday. Eastern is 12-11, 4-6 in the MAC. Senior guard Rodney Pierce leads the Bulls in scoring at 18.7 ppg.

The Bulls have won four of the past five meetings against Eastern at Alumni Arena.

Defense has been a problem for UB lately. Although opponents are shooting at only a .444 clip for the season, each of the last seven opponents have shot 50 percent or better.

Megan Van Tatenhove, the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, will lead the St. Bonaventure women (17-7, 5-4) into a road game against Charlotte (14-9, 7-2 A-10), the 2009 A-10 Tournament champions. The Bonnies will be trying to extend their road win streak to four games while Charlotte has won its last 10 home games.

The UB women (7-16, 3-7) will be on the road at Ball State (8-13, 5-4 MAC). The game matches the only two players in the conference who are averaging scoring-rebounding doubles this season.

Kourtney Brown of UB, last week's MAC Player of the Week, is averaging 17.9 and 11.5. Emily Maggert of the Cardinals is averaging 18.7 and 10.9.
