Newstead fire hall plans pursued

SUBURBAN CORRESPONDENT

Story tools:

The Newstead Fire Company is seeking permission from the Town Board on its plans for an estimated $850,000 addition to its fire hall on Cummings Road.

Fire Chief Douglas S. Jones and building committee co-chairmen John L. Wideman and Richard J. Rebmann updated the board at its work session Monday on plans to add three truck bays, office and training space and more storage to the facility, which also houses the Newstead Senior Center.

In a three-hour work session, the board covered a range of topics beyond the fire company’s plans, including updates on plans for the Town Hall expansion and renovations to the basement of the Newstead Library; the future of Limerick Hall; a drainage study on Akron Airport; and a to-do list on the new public works complex it is building with the Village of Akron.

The fire company would like to start work on the expansion, which would be north of the present building, by this summer. According to Jones, any purchases greater than $100,000 need Town Board approval under the fire company’s contract with the town. But no town money is involved in the project, which does not require Planning Board approval.

A resolution on the project could be presented at the board’s next regular meeting Monday, Supervisor David L. Cummings said.

The new truck bays would be longer and have higher doors to better accommodate equipment, according to Rebmann. The existing bays would house smaller vehicles, including the ambulance. The fire company also has a 1941 pumper truck that it would like to place on display, fire officials said.

On another topic, Jones said the fire company has trained four members in the use of the town’s Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, technology.
