Trustee elections loom in three Niagara County villages in March, while voters will visit the polls in late spring in two villages in the western end of the county to elect mayors, as well.
Candidates’ petitions must be filed with the village clerks in Barker, Middleport and Wilson starting Tuesday, with a deadline of Feb. 9 for the March 16 election. In addition, Wilson residents use party caucus nominations as a method of determining their slates of candidates, as well as independent candidates’ petitions.
In Barker, seats held by trustees Charles Fuller and Anthony Schultz will be up for election. Fuller has served on the board since 2004, while Schultz was appointed by Mayor Jo Ann Greenwald in October to fill the unexpired term of Trustee John Hayden, who died in September. The trustees serve two-year terms.
Barker Clerk Kathie Smith said six petitions had been picked up as of Friday. “But we don’t know if all six will come back,” she added.
There are two trustee positions open in Middleport, currently filled by Thomas Conley, who has served since 1996, and Richard Westcott, who is finishing his first term during his second tour of duty with the board. He also served as a trustee from 1990 to 1996. These are two-year terms.
Middleport Clerk Rebecca Schweigert said the two incumbents were the only ones to have picked up petitions by week’s end, although potential candidates may pick up petitions through the filing period.
There is one trustee seat open in Wilson, held by Milton “Ollie” Clark, who has served on the board since 1990. This is a four-year term.
Mayoral elections are planned this year in Youngstown and Lewiston. Youngstown voters don’t go to the polls until May 18, when they also will elect two trustees.
Lewiston elections will be held in June when residents will elect a mayor and three trustees.
