Ash Wednesday retreat
“Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me,” an Ash Wednesday retreat, will be held from 9:30 a. m. to 3 p. m. Feb. 17 in the St. Columban Center, 6892 Lakeshore Road, Derby.
Presenter is Eileen M. Charleton, a member of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners who served in Tanzania and other countries for more than 20 years.
Cost is $38. Registration required by Feb. 7.
Sangha gathering today
A winter Sangha gathering will be held from 4 to 9 p. m. today in Rosary Hall at Daemen College, 4380 Main Street, Amherst. Guests should bring an entree, side dish, salad or dessert to share for up to eight people.
Nonperishable foods will be accepted on behalf of Loaves&Fishes pantry.
The event is hosted by members of the Awakening Community.
Chaplains’ sacrifice recalled
VA Western New York Healthcare System will hold an interfaith memorial service at 2 p. m. Feb. 7 in remembrance of four Army chaplains who exhibited remarkable heroism before being killed during World War II.
After a German torpedo hit an Army transport ship off the icy waters of Greenland in 1943, the four chaplains—a Methodist minister, a rabbi, a Dutch Reformed Church pastor and a Catholic priest—gave up their life jackets to young soldiers, locked arms together and prayed in the tradition of their own faiths.
The service will be held in room 301 of Freedom Hall at the Buffalo VA site, 3495 Bailey Ave.
Help for addicts
Reformers Unanimous, a “Christ-centered” addictions program, will meet from 7 to 9 p. m. on Fridays in Hedstrom Baptist Church, 55 Losson Road, Cheektowaga. Call 818-1012 for details.
Lecture series broadcasts
Temple Beth Zion will host a series of lectures broadcast live via satellite from the 92nd Street “Y” in New York City, with members of the local audience able to submit questions for the speakers via e-mail.
The series begins at 8 p. m. Feb. 16 with speakers Adam Gopnik and Malcolm Gladwell discussing “Surveying Mankind from China to Peru.” Other sessions are 8:15 p. m. March 2 and 8 p. m. March 16.
The broadcast will be in the Broder Center for Jewish Education, 700 Sweet Home Road, Amherst.
Service for first responders
Faith Fellowship Church, 11478 Main St., Clarence, will host a special banquet and tribute at 6:30 p. m. Feb. 26 for all first responders—law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians.
All first responders and their families are invited and are asked to RSVP by Feb. 19 by calling the church office, 759-6632, or registering online at ffc@faithfellowship.us .
