SILVER CREEK—The Rev. James E. Fitzgerald, retired pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, died Sunday in Lake Shore Nursing Home, Irving, after a lengthy illness. He was 68.
Born in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Diocesan Preparatory Seminary in Buffalo and St. John Vianney Seminary in East Aurora. He was ordained by Bishop James A. McNulty in St. Joseph New Cathedral on May 20, 1967.
Father Fitzgerald was pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel from 2002 to 2008, then was appointed pastor of the merged parish, which included St. Rose of Lima in Forestville and St. John Bosco in Sheridan. He retired July 31.
Previously, he served at St. Elizabeth’s in Cherry Creek; Annunciation, St. Teresa, All Saints, Queen of Heaven and Holy Family, all in Buffalo; St. Peter’s in Le Roy; St. Mary’s in Bolivar; Sacred Heart in Portville; and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Brant.
He was chaplain for the Hanover Center Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving are a brother, Bernard, and a sister, Sue Ann Philip.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Bishop Edward U. Kmiec at 10:30 a. m. Thursday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 165 Central Ave.
