Canadian police stage DWI checkpoint at bridge
Story tools:
FORT ERIE, Ont.—Canadian police Sunday picked one of the busiest travel days of the year to conduct a checkpoint looking for drunken drivers, as thousands of people crossed the Peace Bridge following the long Thanksgiving weekend and a Buffalo Bills home game.
Officers from the Niagara Regional Police Service and four other Canadian police agencies screened drivers between 3 p. m. and 8:30 p. m. as they crossed the Peace Bridge into Canada.
Police stopped and checked more than 5,300 vehicles, conducted 69 roadside screening tests and made three arrests for impaired driving or being over the legal limit, according to the regional police. Five drivers had their licenses suspended for three days, one person was arrested for possession of a stun gun and 10 drivers received traffic tickets.
