Williamsville North's third straight trip to the field hockey state final four ended with a 1-0 loss to IV-Greene in a Class A semifinal played Friday at Vestal High School.
The loss was the first of the season for the Spartans, who finished 20-1. Greene (19-0) moves on to today's state title game.
Greene scored on a penalty stroke in the first 10 minutes of the game.
"We still can't figure out how they got a penalty stroke. I can't even begin to tell you," said North coach Kris LaPaglia. "They had us on our heels the first 10 minutes. It was a learning experience. You have to be ready to play when that whistle blows."
North was outshot, 16-12. The Spartans had a goal called back. North's Allie Ahern was named to the state's all-tournament team while goalkeeper Jess Wess (12 saves) represented North on the state sportsmanship team.
Amherst fell to IV-Maine-Endwell, 4-1, in the Class B semifinal. The Tigers finished 14-6-1.
Amherst coach Laurie LeGoff said the score is not reflective of how close the game was. Her team trailed just 1-0 with 10 minutes remaining.
It was 2-0 when Amherst's Lauren Williams scored on a cross from Katrina McQuiggan with 5 minutes left. "They had the better of the play," said LeGoff. "They had quality shots and followed up."
LeGoff cited her goaltender Jessica Banning for making good decisions along with 16 saves. Senior midfielder Beth Bullock injured her knee with 10 minutes left and did not return.

Section VI had a big first day at the New York State Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at Webster Schroeder High School. The section is the top seed in four events going into today's finals starting at 10:15 a.m.
Kenmore West senior Marissa Dressel, the defending state champion in the 100 and 200, is the top seed in the 100 in 52.39. She's fourth in the 200. Jamestown's Lauren Caldwell is the No. 1 seed in the 100 butterfly in 56.80. Olean's 200 medley relay earned the top seed with an automatic All-American time of 1:49.20. The other top seed is Kenmore West's 400 free relay in 3:36.24.
The team title appears to be out of reach as Section I has a healthy lead, but second or third place is a real possibility, according to Section VI chairman Bruce Johnson of Frewsburg. "Our kids are as good as anybody in the state and we're proving it this weekend," he said. "We're real pleased. We have at least one swimmer in every championship final and as many as two or three in scoring position."
In the 50 free, Amherst eighth-grader Aleza Epstein has the second-fastest time at 24.35.
In diving, Audrey Mulhisen of Springville was 11th, Megan McInerney of Grand Island was 18th and Ashley Keller of Lockport was 23rd.

Frewsburg lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to III-Sauquoit Valley in a Class C state semifinal game played Friday at Cortland State.
Sauquoit Valley scored with two minutes left in the game on a cross.
"It was a tough time to give up one," said Frewsburg coach Jerome Lee Yaw. "A team comes in 21-0 and most people say this team will be dominant, but that wasn't the case. We almost scored in the first two minutes. It was pretty even."
The Bears finished 18-3-1.
