Adele Nowak, a retired Hilbert College faculty member and campus leader, died Saturday in her Town of Hamburg home. She was 85.

Born Adele Greene, she was a lifelong town resident. She was a graduate of Hamburg High School, where she was a member of the Girls Service Club and the National Honor Society. She received a degree in business education from the University of Buffalo, where as a senior she was president of Chi Omega sorority.

Mrs. Nowak taught at Lake Shore Central High School for six years before leaving to start a family.

She then taught at Rosary Hill College, now Daemen College, before joining Hilbert College, where she coordinated the secretarial sciences program for 17 years. During her time there, she was president of the Hilbert College Guild, campus chairwoman of the United Way and served on several committees. She also was a campus Eucharistic minister.

Mrs. Nowak won the Business Educators Association’s Teacher of the Year award in 1981 and, among other professional activities, served on a state community college evaluation team for four years and took part in a two-year Cornell University occupational education workshop.

She was a member of state business teacher, junior college and occupational education associations, as well as several regional and national education groups.

After retiring, Mrs. Nowak traveled widely with her husband, Robert, before his death 16 years ago. She also enjoyed theater, the arts and gardening at the family home on the Lake Erie shore.

Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Kathleen M. and Christine A.
