Sylvia C. Simmons, served in Erie County government

Sylvia C. Simmons, who served in Erie County government for many years, died Nov. 9 in her Buffalo home after a brief illness. She was 89.
The former Sylvia Brown was born and raised in New York City. In 1942, she came to Buffalo, where she met and married F. Cecil Brown. The couple opened Brown’s Funeral Home on East Utica Street in 1953.
After her husband’s death in 1962, she finished his term representing the 12th Ward on the Erie County Board of Supervisors.
She married Charles Simmons in 1966.
Mrs. Simmons went to work for the Erie County Democratic Party in the early 1960s and served as deputy clerk secretary to the Erie County Legislature.
She was vice president of the Buffalo Federation of Women’s Clubs and former treasurer of the Buffalo chapter of Links Inc. She also was co-founder of the Les Amies Social Club.
Besides her husband, Charles, she is survived by a son, Cecil; and a sister, Muriel Jeffrey.
A memorial Mass will offered at 11 a. m. Saturday in Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 317 Leroy Ave.
