Tuesday’s games
Carolina 3, Montreal 2 (SO): Carey Price stopped all six Carolina attempts in the shootout, and Maxim Lapierre scored the winner for the Canadiens. Price stopped Tuomo Ruutu, Jussi Jokinen, Rod Brind’Amour, Sergei Samsonov and Bryan Rodney before Lapierre finally beat Carolina’s Manny Legace on Montreal’s sixth attempt. Price then deflected Matt Cullen’s shot.
Washington 4, N. Y. Rangers 2: Matt Bradley bounced back from having his face bloodied in a first-period fight to net the winning goal with 4:51 left. Alex Ovechkin also scored in his return from injury for the Caps. Martin Gaborik scored both goals for the Rangers and moved into a tie for the league lead with Ovechkin with his 15th.
Ottawa 3, Toronto 2: Mike Fisher scored twice for the Senators, including the tiebreaking goal in the second period. Phil Kessel and Niklas Hagman scored for the Leafs (3-11-5), who lost their fourth straight.
Nashville 4, San Jose 3: Joel Ward and David Legwand each had a goal and two assists for the Predators, who earned their third straight win.
Colorado 3, Calgary 2: Ryan Wilson scored his first NHL goal and added an assist and Milan Hejduk got the game-winner for the Avalanche. Calgary captain Jarome Iginla had his 12th goal of the season.
Monday’s late game
Tampa Bay 4, Phoenix 1: Vincent Lecavalier had two goals and an assist and Mike Smith made 30 saves to lead the Lightning. Alex Tanguay had a goal and two assists and Martin St. Louis also scored for the Lightning, who have recorded points in six straight games—four wins and two overtime losses. The Coyotes have dropped five of their past seven.
Around the rinks
Chicago Blackhawks: Buffalo native Patrick Kane and teammates Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith are about to be signed to contract extensions, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.
New Jersey Devils: Brendan Shanahan, who last played with the Devils, is retiring from the NHL after 21 seasons and an almost certain Hall of Fame career. The 40-year-old forward announced Tuesday that he wouldn’t play again. Shanahan, who scored 656 career goals, decided to leave the Devils in October one day after he was told there was no spot for him on New Jersey’s top three lines. He has not played this season.
