College report: Niagara falls a goal short

Niagara's first-ever trip to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament men's soccer final ended in heart-breaking fashion, as the Purple Eagles fell, 1-0, to Loyola on Sunday in Fairfield, Conn.
Loyola freshman Matt Tyrie scored his first career goal with just 23.8 seconds remaining in the second extra session. The goal spoiled a historic run for the Purple Eagles (8-10-2), as the fourth seed advanced to their first final by defeating top-seeded Iona on Friday in penalty kicks.
"I'm very proud on how our team played," NU coach Dermot McGrane said. "Losing Levi [Tesch] and [Justin] Roundy on red cards [Friday], we needed other guys to step up. I really believe if we would have gone into penalties, we would have won."
NU's John Fiutowski, Carl Haworth and Nick Lippa made the MAAC all-tournament team.
The postseason run also came to an end for Medaille in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Mavericks dropped a 1-0 decision to host Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh. Medaille's 11-game shutout streak (spanning 1,010 minutes) ended in the 67th minute when Ryan Browne's penalty kick beat sophomore keeper Ryan Goettel. The Mavs (18-3-2) managed just one shot on net in the loss.
Bonnies cruise to win
In women's basketball, St. Bonaventure shot 51 percent from the field and held visiting Akron to just 30 percent in a 67-37 win. Senior Dana Mitchell scored 16 points to pace the Bonnies, who put the game away with a 19-4 run in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. St. Bonaventure visits Canisius on Tuesday.
Niagara coach Kendra Faustin was disappointed in her team's effort after the Purple Eagles fell to visiting Duquesne, 100-69.
"We showed some really good things on Friday, but did not build on them," Faustin said.
Duquesne shot 80 percent (8 of 10) from three-point range. Rachele Folino scored 14 points to lead Niagara, which visits St. Bonaventure on Thursday for a noon start.
Purple Eagles skate to tie
Sophomore Caitlin Jenkins scored the go-ahead goal with 34 seconds left, but host Niagara couldn't hold the lead and Robert Morris' Kelsey Thomas scored with eight seconds left to produce a 2-2 tie in College Hockey America play.
"I'm disappointed that we didn't hold the lead," NU coach Chris MacKenzie said. "We couldn't get the puck out of our own end for the final 30 seconds."
Frances McPhail opened the scoring for the Purple Eagles (5-4-3, 2-1-1).
Griffs' Morrison earns shutout
Dave Kostuch scored with 15:56 to play to push Canisius to a 1-0 win over UConn in Atlantic Hockey at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. Josh Heidinger and Ryan Klusendorf assisted on Kostuch's goal.
Sophomore goalie Dan Morrison made 19 saves to earn his third career shutout. The Griffs went 4 for 4 on penalty kills, a key to the victory, according to coach Dave Smith.
"We battled right to the end and stayed sharp throughout the game," he said.
Medaille loses title game
Host Brockport defeated Medaille, 3-1, to earn the ECAC Upstate New York championship at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field. Senior Laura Freeman (Kenmore West) scored Medaille's only goal, her 19th of the season.
The Lady Mavericks (10-9-2, 7-2-1) were outshot, 25-6, in defeat.
