Strictly Business: George Pyle’s blog on changing health care costs for Kodak workers and retirees, and the new House health reform bill, led Hank to comment:

Thanks for the links and pointers. We must take time to dig in and see for ourselves what is emerging and how it is coming (together? apart?). Didn’t Winston Churchill say presciently, “This isn’t the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning.”

Whatever comes of it, no one is going to be happy. But there should be an accounting as a before and after look.

Michael Moore should have enough here for another movie. And politicians? They had better look behind them. New candidates, and likely a new third party, will be gaining on them. There will be no feathers awarded for anyone’s cap. There’s only the Party of No, and the Party of

Squirm and Wriggle.

john added:

I can’t wait for Congress to adjourn! At least then the Republic will be safe, but only until Congress meets again, then it will be time to start worrying once more. . . .

Matters of Opinion: Pyle’s blog on federal Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan’s visit to Buffalo’s blighted neighborhoods led beastfan to ask:

What are the incentives for these buildings to come down? With so many rotting edifices in this city, one would hope that businesses would want to come in, tear them down and put up nice, new offices or stores. What does Buffalo offer in return?

a tornado struck, a huge swath of trees have been razed to the ground off of the 290. Sure, why renovate existing real estate when you can wipe out

more greenspace?

Buffalo Libertarian added:

Sports: In response to the New York Yankees winning the World Series and becoming champions again — and to dissenter lv2kick, who wrote: “I used to like the Yankees before I finally realized what a stupid sport baseball actually is, coupled with the incredibly arrogant and obnoxious likes of NYC sports fans. I guess if an owner populates his team with enough . . .” — rocket4 advised:

I’ll speak slow so you can understand: NEW

YORK YANKEES WORLD CHAMPS!!!! Don’t hate the game, hate your team for losing. Every team in baseball has the same opportunities the Yanks have, so stop crying.

Outrages & Insights: On James Heaney’s blog about the incredibly low voter turnout in the recently concluded general election, perspective asked:

Without knowing what percent of people

make any effort to become informed about candidates and issues, who can say if 20 percent turnout was good or bad or “pathetic?”

If double that many people had showed up to vote but the additional voters were totally clueless and voted based only on party affiliation or which candidate names look the nicest, would it be an improvement or worsening?

MoneySmart: Samantha Maziarz Christmann’s blog about a return deal on “Baby Einstein” toddler videos or DVDs, following concerns by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood, brought this response from Lydia Bezou- Hojnacki:

. . . My kids learned a lot from Sesame Street and were reading at age two because of it. I didn’t teach them or drill them on anything — they absorbed it from morning and afternoon viewings of Sesame Street nearly every day from the time they could sustain the attention to it.

Whether they watched ten minutes or 40 minutes was up to them, as other activity centers were nearby. I merely turned on the TV at the appropriate time and let them choose.
