Bennett roars into playoffs, St. Joe's rallies

Bennett, which hasn't won a Harvard Cup football championship since 1968 or even been in the playoffs since 1995, is back in postseason play again.

Coach John Kisiel's Tigers clinched fourth place in the Harvard Cup standings with a 16-14 victory over Grover Cleveland on Saturday at All High Stadium.

Bennett will meet No. 1 seed Burgard in one of next week's semifinals. No. 2 Riverside will face No. 3 Lafayette in the other.

Bennett never trailed and owned a 16-6 lead early in the fourth quarter after Carlton Croom's run from 3 yards, his second TD of the day.

"We went in thinking we could win and we held on to win," Kisiel said.

Croom carried 32 times for 197 yards. Bennett got strong defensive play from junior linebacker Mack Calhoun (two sacks), sophomore defensive end McKenzie Brown (two sacks, seven tackles), junior line backer Jovan Fogan (a key interception) and junior defensive tackle Donald Brown.

Hutch-Tech 40, East 12: Six different Engineers scored TDs in the victory. Andrew Elbaneh had 62 of Tech's 125 rushing yards while Mark Horne completed 4 of 9 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. Aaron Radford returned an interception 41 yards for a Hutch touchdown and registered three sacks and five tackles.

McKinley 36, So. Park 0: Markel Ingram passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Macks closed with a 4-4 record. The losing Sparks fell to 3-5.

Monsignor Martin

Canisius 49, Timon-St. Jude 0: The Crusaders, 5-5 overall but unbeaten against Monsignor Martin opposition, rolled over the Tigers behind junior quarterback Travis Eman, who ran for three touchdowns and passed for three more. Eman completed 9 of 14 passes for 276 yards and ran seven times for 128 yards. Timon was held under 100 yards total offense as Jimmy Gaines led the Canisius defense with 12 tackles, giving him 102 for the season. Willie Ruiz and Teddy Gioia each had an interception and John Holland and George Davis each picked off a pass for the Crusaders.

St. Joe's 14, St. Francis 3: The Marauders rallied for 14 points in the fourth quarter to earn a place in next Thursday's League AA championship game against archrival Canisius at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Red Raiders took the lead on a 21-yard field goal by Nick Borgese in the third quarter. Junior Nicholas Hall scored on a 2-yard run and Matthew Rosenhahn connected with Kent Greer on a 50-yard pass play for fourth-quarter scores for St. Joe's.

Cardinal O'Hara 28, Nichols 6: DaShawn Davis blocked a punt that set up Cardinal O'Hara's first touchdown and the Hawks never looked back in a League A semifinal. Fred Nolley scored on a 3-yard run after the blocked punt and Jabari Gordon, Ryan O'Sullivan and Kyree Carter joined the touchdown parade before Nichols scored on a fourth-quarter run from 6 yards out by Ramsey Gayles.

Junior back Rob Davis led the Hawks with 88 yards on 11 carries. Gordon led the O'Hara defense with nine tackles. Davis had seven tackles while Jindra and Dawuan Hicklen each had an interception.

O'Hara will meet St. Mary's for the League A title Thursday.

St. Mary's 41, Niagara Catholic 30: The Lancers held off Niagara Catholic's furious second half rally. Anthony Chiarmonte scored two touchdowns as St. Mary's built a 34-0 halftime lead. A 40-yard fumble return by Melvin Dyster got the Patriots going in the second half. NC's Zach Evans passed for two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions in the second half.

Rashaad Rogers gained 71 yards on six carries for the Lancers while Luke Hinton completed four passes for 97 yards and two scores and Justin Burke had two receptions for 62 yards, 55 coming on a fourth-quarter touchdown catch.
