Lackawanna driver charged with injuring pedestrian

Story tools:

A Lackawanna man was under the influence of drugs when he struck an East Amherst mother crossing South Park Avenue in September, resulting in the amputation of her leg, Buffalo police said.

Steven R. Cavarello, 30, of Electric Avenue, was charged Tuesday with felony vehicular assault, criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while ability impaired by drugs.

Cavarello was at the wheel of a 1992 Pontiac Grand Prix at about 2:15 p. m. Sept. 17, when he struck Sarah Gregory, 30, in the 2300 block of South Park Avenue, pinning her against a minivan.

Laboratory tests showed Cavarello was driving under the influence of trazodone, an anti-depressant; benzodiazepine, a tranquilizer; and buprenorphine, an opiate, police said.
