Sardinia voters to elect new supervisor, 2 board members

NEWS STAFF REPORTER

Story tools:

Sardinia voters will choose a new supervisor and two new Town Board members Tuesday.

Democrat Sheila L. Vrenna is running for supervisor against Republican Mary L. Hannon, who is finishing a one-year term on the board this year. Hannon also has the Independence Party line, and Vrenna will be running under the banner of the Conservatives and Sardinia First.

Vrenna, 62, a retired library media specialist, would use the money the town is receiving from Waste Management for its landfill to eliminate special district taxes.

“We need to be wise about using the money we are receiving from Waste Management,” she said.

Vrenna, who said she has had conflict resolution training, said she would like to get board members working together. She also said she would like to protect and preserve the natural, rural environment of the town.

Hannon, 48, said she would like to bring back harmony to the board. “We’ve fought so many times, people feel that money has been lost in lawsuits.”

Her husband, Michael, was chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals when it gave a variance allowing Gernatt Asphalt Products to start mining most of its 400-acre gravel pit. The Town Board sued the Zoning Board, and Hannon said she would vote to end that suit.

She has worked as the secretary to the sheriff and as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business.

There are four candidates for two four-year terms for Town Board. Republicans Cheryl L. Earl and Daniel L. Miller will be on the Independence line, and Miller has the Conservative backing.

Democrats Anthony D. Korcz and Felecia E. Meyers also are running on the Sardinia First line, and Meyers also has the Conservative line.

Miller, 60, is retired from the Erie County Highway Department. He said the town should work with businesses in the town.

Earl, 43, an associate real estate broker, said the board should rise above petty issues, listen to residents and get back to common sense spending.

Incumbent Republican Clerk Betsy Marsh is facing opposition from Democrat Denise J. Schiener.

Marsh, 56, said the office was computerized under her 20-year tenure. She said with her knowledge of Freedom of Information laws, the clerk’s office is part of checks and balances in the town. Her name also will be on the Independence line.

Schiener, 50, said it is time for a fresh approach to running the clerk’s office. She said she would be professional, accountable and confidential. A registered nurse and licensed massage therapist, she also will be on the Sardinia First line.

There are three candidates for a fouryear term for town justice.

Sharlene Vossler, 71, a Republican and a retired teacher, has been town justice for 12 years.

Joni M. Farleo, 49, a Democrat and business teacher at Pioneer Central High School, also is on the Conservative and Sardinia First lines.

William J. Hopkins, 50, has the Independence and Working Families lines.
