Cleveland Browns: Coach Eric Mangini has no plans to bench Derek Anderson, the NFL’s lowest-rated quarterback, for Brady Quinn or anyone else. Anderson has completed just 23 of 70 passes in the past three games.
Denver Broncos: Former Grand Island punter Brett Kern has been waived by the Denver Broncos. He was replaced on the roster by Mitch Berger, a 16-year veteran who was with Pittsburgh last season. Kern, who played college football at Toledo, was averaging 46.1 yards a punt, but ranked near the bottom of the league in net average (34.5).
Kansas City Chiefs: Running back Larry Johnson has belittled his rookie head coach on what appears to be his Twitter account, saying Todd Haley has “nuthn” when it comes to NFL-quality credentials. One tweet read: “My father got more creditentials than most of these pro coaches.”
Miami Dolphins: Will Allen’s season- ending knee injury will force the Miami Dolphins to go with two rookie cornerbacks beginning Sunday against the New York Jets.
New York Jets: Running back Leon Washington has been placed on season-ending injured reserve after having surgery in which a rod was inserted into his broken right leg. Elsewhere, Braylon Edwards has been charged with misdemeanor assault over accusations he punched a man outside a Cleveland nightclub, an incident that prompted his trade to the Jets.
Tennessee Titans: Coach Jeff Fisher won’t say who will start at quarterback Sunday against Jacksonville, citing “competitive reasons.” Fisher has stuck with Kerry Collins over Vince Young this season in the Titans’ 0-6 start.
National Conference
Dallas Cowboys: Three-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware and the Cowboys have agreed on a contract extension, a six-year deal through the 2015 season.
San Francisco 49ers: Alex Smith is the team’s new starting quarterback. Coach Mike Singletary made the announcement after sitting down with Shaun Hill, who was benched at halftime of the Niners’ loss at Houston on Sunday.
Seattle Seahawks: There is still a chance Walter Jones will play for the Seahawks this season, though that chance is dwindling. Coach Jim Mora said Monday upon Seattle’s return from a bye week that the nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle is “iffy” to practice this week.
