In his work as a photojournalist in Africa, Brendan Bannon tries to coax stories of meaning and promise out of dire and desperate circumstances.

An exhibition of Bannon’s recent photography opens in Allentown’s Studio Hart (65 Allen St.) next Friday. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Christian Science Monitor and Britain’s Daily Telegraph and Guardian newspapers.

Bannon’s photographs focus on the refugee crises afflicting countries throughout Africa, including Kenya, South Sudan, Yemen and Tanzania. His images, Bannon has said, have special interest and relevance to residents of the United States, which he called “a country made of refugees and political and economic migrants.”

“I take a particular interest in these lives, as my mother was a refugee from the Ukraine. In a strange way we all owe our existence to the turmoil of the world,” Bannon said in a statement. “I don’t shy away from difficult stories. I look at people’s lives as being full of meaningful relationships, striving against the odds and achieving small victories.”
