Bowing to complaints, company plans berm

In a gesture to agitated neighbors, Lardon Construction has agreed to put up a 20- foot berm on its property, Blasdell Mayor Ernest Jewett announced at the Village Board meeting Wednesday.
The company has drawn fire from some residents following the addition of an organic waste composting area on its property in February.
Jewett said the berm will be on the east side of Lardon’s property along Martin Avenue to cut down on noise and dust.
A representative from the company is scheduled to speak at the Oct. 7 board meeting, where residents can air their questions and concerns, the mayor said.
In other matters, Trustee David Adrian said the state Department of Transportation on Wednesday agreed to handle $451,000 in federally funded improvements slated for a 750- foot section of South Park Avenue and Lake Avenue.
“We have established a working relationship,” Adrian said. “We’re hoping that now it’s our turn.”
Adrian was referring to previous plans by the DOT to refurbish the length of South Park and Lake avenues that were first postponed, then eliminated.
Though the grant money from the federal government will allow for a limited number of upgrades to Blasdell’s street-scape, Adrian said Blasdell is hoping for a full village makeover by the DOT, similar to ones in Hamburg and East Aurora, where period lighting, curbing improvements, crosswalks and green space are more extensive.
In a related item, Adrian said that four local businesses had received approvals to upgrade their buildings as part of a separate main street revitalization grant worth up to $170,000. At least 13 other applications are awaiting the nod from the Village Board to go forward.
In other news, village officials said that the new Blasdell Web site, Blasdell.org, will be up and running before the end of the week. The new online tool will allow residents to contact board members through e-mail and offer various village forms previously available only in hard copy.
The Web site also will feature a monthly calendar of village- related events.
