The billboard: A daily dose from camp - Pads are poppin'

PITTSFORD — The Bills worked out in pads Monday for the first time this summer. There was a lot of work on the run game early in the session. Second-round pick Andy Levitre, in his first practice after signing a contract Monday, got a few repetitions with the starting offensive line. Trent Edwards' best completions came later in the workout. He had good timing with Terrell Owens on a deep out and audibled to hit Lee Evans on another out route. It was a good crowd for a weekday of perhaps 1,500 lining the grass field.

The hitting and tempo seemed pretty good, but overall the execution was in preseason form, as coach Dick Jauron acknowledged.

"With the pads on it's a very different practice," Jauron said. "They worked their way through it. Clearly when you start a training camp, there are a lot more mistakes everywhere than you want. But that's why we're practicing. That's why it's got to start sometime. We'll work through them."

T.O. today: Meeting the owner

Terrell Owens stopped by Ralph Wilson's golf cart during Monday's practice to shake hands with the Bills' owner for the first time. The two had talked on the phone after Owens was signed by the Bills.

"It was definitely a pleasure meeting him," Owens said. "Obviously I can't be more thankful with the opportunity, being blessed just to be here."

The Bills' visit to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 9 won't be Owens' first. He played in the Hall of Fame Game in 2000. Owens said he doesn't dwell on his Hall of Fame credentials.

"Somewhere down the road, I'll sit back and reflect and have insight on that," he said. "But at this point I don't really think about it. ... Actually, my jersey's already in there from the 20-reception game that I had against the Bears [for San Francisco in 2000.]"

RCW address

Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. showed up at camp and spoke to his troops for about five minutes at the end of practice.

"He just told us he's excited about the year and he's proud of the way we're working," defensive end Chris Kelsay said. "He was excited to see us and he wanted to encourage us."

Stevie out

Second-year receiver Stevie Johnson, who looked very good the first two days of camp, is out with a rib injury. Defensive end Copeland Bryan had to be helped off the field with a hamstring injury.

"It's not a broken rib," Jauron said of Johnson. "I think it's a cartilage injury between the ribs, and it may keep him out for a little while. Very sore and very tender."
