American League

Seattle 2, Detroit 1: Jarrod Washburn pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks as the Mariners won for the eighth time in 10 games. He is 5-1 with a 1.81 ERA in his last seven starts.

N. Y. Yankees 6, Oakland 3: CC Sabathia won his 10th game of the season, and Mark Teixeira’s homer helped New York rally from an early 3-0 deficit. Chien-Ming Wang of the Yankees sought a second opinion on his injured pitching shoulder, and it’s uncertain when the right-hander might return to the mound.

Minnesota at L. A. Angels: Los Angeles took a five-game winning streak into Thursday night’s game, even if it is missing Vladimir Guerrero, Torii Hunter and Juan Rivera from its lineup.

National League

San Francisco 5, Atlanta 1: Barry Zito gave up only three hits in seven innings as the Giants avoided a four-game sweep. San Francisco improved to 2-5 on a 10-game road trip while the Braves, who had a four-game winning streak end, finished a 6-2 homestand.

Philadelphia 9, San Diego 4: Cole Hamels pitched seven effective innings, whlie Jayson Werth and Pedro Feliz had three hits apiece for the Phillies. The NL East leaders moved 6z games up on Atlanta and Florida with their 15th win in 17 games.

St. Louis 4, Washington 1 (6): Adam Wainwright pitched six strong innings as the Cardinals snapped a three-game losing skid with a rain-shortened victory. A 1-hour, 30-minute delay left the field unplayable.

Arizona 11, Pittsburgh 4: Miguel Montero doubled in the go-ahead run in a five-run seventh and pinch-hitter Chad Tracy capped the inning with a three-run home run. The Diamondbacks’ bullpen pitched four scoreless innings after Dan Haren had an off night, giving up four runs in five innings.

Around the horn

Philadelphia Phillies: Relievers J. C. Romero and Chad Durbin were placed on the 15-day disabled list, a big blow to the Philadelphia bullpen. Romero has a strained left forearm and Durbin strained a muscle in his back.

Chicago White Sox: Jim Parque, a former pitcher for the White Sox and Tampa Bay, says he used human growth hormone “about six times” after he was cut by Chicago in 2002 and before he tried a comeback with the Rays the following season. Parque made his confession in a lengthy, first-person account printed Thursday in the Chicago Sun-Times. He says he tried HGH in a bid to recover from a shoulder injury that he blames for derailing his career.

Washington Nationals: Left-hander Scott Olsen underwent surgery Thursday to repair a small labrum tear in his left shoulder. The operation showed no further damage, but Olsen will be out six to eight weeks to begin a throwing program and should be ready for spring training, acting general manager Mike Rizzo said.
