The New York Islanders selected London center John Tavares with the first overall pick in Friday night's NHL Entry Draft in Montreal's Bell Centre.
Tavares, the nephew of the Buffalo Bandits legend of the same name, has long been considered the top player available and the Islanders went with him even as rumors grew they were considering Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman or Brampton center Matt Duchene.
The Tampa Bay Lightning followed by taking Hedman with the No. 2 pick and the Colorado Avalanche took Duchene No. 3
In a blockbuster trade, the Philadelphia Flyers have acquired defenseman Chris Pronger from Anaheim for forward Joffrey Lupul, defenseman Lucas Sbisa, the Flyers' first round pick tonight (No. 21), their first round pick in 2010 and a conditional third-round pick in 2010 or 2011.
The Buffalo Sabres will pick No. 13 in the first round. Stay tuned to Buffalonews.com and the Sabres Edge blog for updates.
