Ex-Amherst supervisor gets job in State Senate

Story tools:

ALBANY—A Democrat who was ousted by Amherst voters in the 2005 supervisor’s race has landed on her feet with a job in the Democratic-controlled State Senate.

Susan Grelick, who served nine years as Amherst supervisor, started Monday as counsel to the Senate’s Local Government Committee, headed by Westchester Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith deferred questions about her background and salary to Grelick, who said she will be making about $90,000 a year.

Grelick considered running last year for the seat of now-retired Sen. Mary Lou Rath, a Republican. Instead, Democrat Joe Mesi ran and lost to Republican Michael Ranzenhofer. Mesi, who also recently got a Senate job that has been criticized as a patronage hire and reward for running for Senate, is getting paid $70,000 a year.

“Local government is really my passion,” said Grelick, who also served five years as Amherst clerk. She has also taught a four-night course on local government at the University at Buffalo Law School and has been most recently employed as a gift planning officer at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. Her job will take her to Albany on days when the Senate is in session.
