Crash might provide some workers’ comp

The families of some people who died in the Continental Connection Flight 3407 airplane crash may qualify for benefits under the the state’s workers’ compensation program.
“Anyone on that plane who was on their way to a business meeting, or returning home from one, may qualify. That would include anyone who was flying to do sales work,” said Melvyn L. Hurwitz, a Buffalo attorney who has handled workers’ comp cases for almost 50 years.
“Anyone working on the flight crew would also qualify, either in New York or their state of residence,” Hurwitz added.
For families that qualify, dependents of the person killed in the crash could receive up to $550 per week, Hurwitz said.
He added that families that qualify also can receive up to $5,000 for funeral expenses.
Information on who qualifies and how to apply is available from the state Workers Compensation Board’s Web site, www.wcb.state.ny.us or by calling the board’s Buffalo district office at (866) 211-0645. Authorities have said that some of the 50 people killed in the Feb. 12 crash were flying to Buffalo for meetings, or returning to Buffalo after attending meetings elsewhere.
