The biggest gardening challenge as we enter summer is keeping plant roots moist. Plants need water to grow, as it’s the vehicle that carries nutrients, and plants die if they don’t get enough water.

At the first Garden Walk Buffalo in 1995, there were around 30 gardens that were seen by about 600 visitors. Today, only one of those original gardens (at Unitarian Universalist Church) still participates, according to Jim Charlier, Garden Walk president.
June marks the beginning of garden tour season across Western New York. In addition to Garden Walk Buffalo next month, garden tours are planned everywhere from South Buffalo to Lewiston.
This column started with a little cat on the road. It was 1 p. m., temperature 89 degrees. I felt sad as I drove by a dead kitty on the hot pavement, probably hit by a car. Then she raised her head, panting, gasping.
The Niagara Frontier Koi& Pond Club will present its 2008 Koi & Goldfish Show this weekend at Menne Nursery, 3100 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst. Hours are 10 a. m. to 6 p. m. NEW YORK –All those celebrities in oversized sunglasses might be doing more than shielding themselves from the paparazzi: Large lenses, especially those that fit the contours of the face, provide better protection from the sun’s rays.
“The Truth About Gardening” will be revealed at 10:30 a. m. Saturday when PeterBonSey, known locally as “the English Gardener,” will speak at Brighton Place Library, 9 9 9 Brighton Road, Town of Tonawanda. The event is free to the public.
