It was about six years ago when Chris Lexner started seeing stars. The place: Mystic, Conn. –the historic seaport town. People hung the large five-pointed stars on their homes, and Lexner fell for them. After reading my column last week on the local tradition of screened-in garages in the summertime, Bea Slick, who lives with her husband, Jack, in Williamsville, sent me an e-mail with additional thoughts.

1. Oh, go fly a fish. But first, head to Buffalo’s waterfront, where the folks from Explore & More children’s museum will show you how to make fish wind socks, just like carp kites from Japan! Smaller hands will make snowflakes and pretend it’s Christmas in July. The fun runs from 1 to 4 p. m. Friday on the central wharf at Erie Canal Harbor. Free! Call 655-5131 for more information.

BILOXI, Miss. — So, why does hair turn gray? “It’s kind of a straightforward answer because there is a genetic predisposition to gray hair, when it will happen and whether it is gray, silver or white,” said Dr. Thomas Garrott, an Ocean Springs dermatologist. “I explain our appearance this way: Because of our genetics there is a picture of you when you are 100 years old and you just work your way there.”

This departure represented the end of the important Eaton Era in New York State ornithology. Steve and his father, Elon Howard Eaton, represented the best of this field. I will write about Eaton’s dad — the author of the first “Birds of New York State” — in another column, but today I salute Steve Eaton.
This is the time of year when sporting events make the most significant headlines. The Olympic Games coming up Aug. 8-24 in Beijing, China, are receiving intense attention, especially the trials for the big events by U. S. athletes.
