Current: Cowl necks, sequins and aviator styles fly for fall

Story tools:

Draped in style

Have you noticed all the cowl necklines out there? Like many fashions this fall, they will remind many women of another fashion era — such as a certain dress they wore in the late '70s or a long sweater they lived in during the '80s. With leggings, of course.

Some of this season's cowl necklines drape just slightly — on a matte jerse or silky dress, perhaps. Others aren't so shy about it, showing up as a mega cowl on a ribbed- or chunky-knit sweater.

What you'll find is that this season's cowl necks can be very sporty but quite dressy as well Ñ depending on the style and fabric.

And there are plenty of in-between cowl necks as well.

Look for simple Ts with slight draping at the neckline that offer a change from your typical crew and V-necks.

Trend watch
Fashions from the '20s and '30s are getting attention — fueled, in part, by the movie "Amelia" — about the famed aviator Amelia Earhart (played by Hilary Swank).

Her leather flight jacket immediately comes to mind, but key accessories inspired by the woman — or the era — include aviator sunglasses, cloche hats, extra-long pearls and, of course, mannish shirts and those long scarves.

Brighten your day
You don't have to wait for the holidays to add a little sparkle to your wardrobe. Smatterings of sequins show up on blazers, tunics, dresses, tanks, Ts, scarves, headbands, shoes and even sneakers this fall.

More subtle than some of the glitzy looks of the past, many of these items show up on rather simple pieces and are designed to be worn in daytime.

Just remember less is more.

A tip from the Los Angeles Times: "Wear them as sparingly and subtly as possible, opting for one sequined item at a time and toning down the color palette."

For daytime, try casual items such as a T-shirt or cardigan with a light dusting of a neutral-colored or monochromatic embellishment (pink sequins on a pink tank top, for example).

And finally .‚.‚.

"When I went to Hollywood in 1927, the girls were wearing lumpy sweaters and skirts .‚.‚. I was wearing sleek suits and half-naked beaded gowns and piles and piles of pearls."

Louise Brooks, from "Fashionista: A Century of Style Icons," by Simone Werle (Prestel, $29.95)
