Best Bets / Tips for family fun

Story tools:

1. Get extreme this weekend. Imagine two full days of BMX and water-cross sporting events, live alternative music and intense exhibitions by the Queen City Rollers. Demonstrations run from 11:30 a. m. to 7:30 p. m. Saturday and Sunday at Darien Lake Theme Park Resort. Free with park admission at 9993 Allegheny Road in Darien Center. For more information, visit www.GoDarien-Lake.com or call (585) 599-4641.

2. The Traveling Wall gathers no moss. Come see a replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Memorial Wall through Monday at Knox Farm State Park, 437 Buffalo Road in East Aurora. Other memorials, too, will honor American veterans who have served our country – as well as a tribute to those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. For a complete listing of events, visit www.avtt.org or call the East Aurora Chamber of Commerce at 652-8444.

3. Hug your Teddy Bear. And then bring it to the annual Teddy Bear Picnic from 4 to 6 p. m. Tuesday at the Buffalo& Erie County Botanical Gardens. Expect music from the Hill Brothers, a visit from Clown Alley and a picnic dinner of grilled hot dog, snack and beverage. Cost is $5 per person. Stay on and catch the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra from 7 to 8:15 p. m. The picnic is presented in conjunction with the Theodore Roosevelt site.

4. Call it the Canine Crawl. Friday night there will be a historical walking tour of downtown Buffalo for families and their dogs. Registration starts at 6:15 p. m. at Puppy Playpen, 421 Ellicott St. Tour starts at 7 p. m. and should last 90 minutes. Hot dogs, dog treats, dessert and coffee will be served. Cost in advance is $25 per family or $20 and pet food donation. $30 day of event. Call 602-7169 to register. Presented by Companion Animal Network and Buffalo Tours.
