Design Notes: Techoration trends, spider-casts
Time to techorate
Today’s word: “Techorating” –the art of combining interior design with technology.
Doug Wilson, designer on TLC’s “Trading Spaces” and techorator for LG Electronics, shared these tips with McClatchy Newspapers:
• The technology in your room should be in proportion to the room for the best aesthetic and functional fit. Look for the best integration over size.
• With the TV, speakers, DVD players and more, people today need to practice cord control. New technology and a few easy steps make it easy to maintain a cleaner, more organized look. Go wireless to give your living space a crisp, modern feel.
• Tabletop or wall-mounting for a flat screen can add space to your room and streamline the look and feel.
Believe it (or not)
Spotted on the Old Farmer’s Almanac Web site, www.almanac.com : A little folklore for the season. Here goes: • When spiders build new webs, the weather will be clear.
• The sunflower raising its head indicates rain.
• Listen for the sound of the first cicadas. The first frost of the year will occur about three months later.
• An open anthill indicates good weather; a closed one, an approaching storm.
Design tip
Odd is good, when it comes to things like pillows and plants. That’s the word from Fresh Home magazine.
“Even numbers of pillows –two, four or six –look too studied and formal to be welcoming and personalized. Stick with threes and fives for maximum impact,”
write the editors. It’s the same with plants: Plant in groupings of three, five and seven to add interest to a garden space.
And finally…
“I have a simple philosophy: Fill what’s empty. Empty what’s full. And scratch where it itches.” –Alice Roosevelt Longworth
