Cooking seems to have become a competitive sport these days, so plenty of local foodies will be interested in the Nickel City Chef contests scheduled for four different Sundays during the summer. In each competition, a well-known local chef will be pitted against a challenger to prepare three dishes in under an hour for judging by an expert panel. The contests will take place at 2:30 p. m. in Artisan Kitchens and Baths (200 Amherst St.). Here are the dates and the chefs who will be challenged:
• June 21: Krista Van Wagner of Curley’s
• July 19: J. J. Richert of Torches
• Aug. 23: Paul Jenkins of Tempo
• Sept. 20: Adam Goetz of Sample
On each occasion, the chefs and challengers will be presented with a locally grown “secret ingredient” they will be required to use. A complete pantry full of other ingredients will also be available.
Onlookers and cheerleaders are definitely encouraged. Price of admission is $20, which includes a drink, some snacks and viewing at a series of flat screens scattered throughout. Tickets go on sale June 12 at Spoiled Rotten (833 Elmwood Ave.) as well as at Artisan Kitchens and Baths.
Would-be challengers have until Monday to apply, but the field is limited to restaurant professionals. Visit www.nickelcitychef.com for more information. Sonoma Valley wines
At 6 p. m. Monday, O’Connell’s American Bistro (981 Kenmore Ave., Kenmore) will present a five-course dinner featuring the wines of the Sonoma Valley. The price of $65 features dinner, tasting and a champagne reception. For reservations, call 877-8788.
