Design Notes: Celebrate style
Designer Celerie Kemble, whose clients include fashion designers Tory Burch and Lela Rose, has put out a new decorating book –“Celerie Kemble: To Your Taste” (Clarkson Potter, $45).
In it, she mentions some of her favorite things: An English-armed chair; a little bit of animal print in every room; bamboo; canopy beds; lava stone for tabletops; Ikat fabrics; grass-cloth wallcoverings; Portuguese rugs; sisal, wool and other natural-fiber rugs; lattice-covered walls; clean, uncluttered surfaces; extraordinary ceilings (faux-painted or wallpapered), and dramatic floors with inlay stone or faux-painted graphic patterns.
What she’s not so crazy about: too much wall-to-wall carpeting; mirrors hung horizontally, and plug-in or spray air fresheners, among other things.
Design tip
Don’t let your pedestal bowls – including Grandma’s pretty compote – go unused this time of year. Put them to work to elevate everyday objects to elegant displays, suggests Better Homes and Gardens.
Use them to show off ornaments, faux fruit, even colorful ribbon candy on a sideboard or dining table.
Upload fabric designs
Become your own fabric designer with help from Spoonflower.
The online business ( www.spoonflower.com) lets you upload a design to be printed on cotton fabric, which you can use to make your own projects. Picture a throw pillow with your child’s drawing, curtains adorned with photos from the Hubble telescope or a retro apron made from a scan of a vintage fabric. Designs can be created using Photoshop or one of several free design programs. (Some are listed in the frequently asked questions section.) You can order an 8-by-8-inch swatch for $5, a 21-by-18-inch fat quarter for $11 or fabric yardage for $18 a yard, plus shipping.
And finally …
