Story tools:

1. Talk about training grounds. Visit the Hamburg Fairgrounds this weekend for miles of model train track. That’s right, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. Sunday, the Western New York Railway Historical Society presents its holiday Train and Toy Show.

Expect hundreds of toy trains, memorabilia, dolls – Madd Matt’s NASCAR and Live Steamers – too. Admission $6. Children under age 12 get in free. Find the grounds at 5820 South Park Ave.

2. If misery loves company, you’ll love the Great Depression. Get a taste of the era at 2 p.m. Sunday as the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society presents a multimedia look at the music that helped sustain this country. The Blue Eagle String Band will perform the songs of the ’30s while documentary photographs steal the stage. All this history for $8, at 25 Nottingham Court.

3. Hike to Cheektowaga, why don’t you, for some free jug band tunes.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, Matt’s Music for Kids will perform “Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas” at Borders Books, 2015 Walden Ave.

4. Make a house you can eat. Graham cracker houses are the rage, so learn how to make one Saturday for free at Elma Public Library, 1860 Bowen Road. Call 652-2719 to reserve your place at either 2 or 2:45 p. m.
