The school alternative
A good way to trim pounds and expenses may be a trip back to school. That’s right. Many colleges and universities offer nonstudent memberships to their gyms and athletic facilities for a low rate. Even some high schools are opening their doors for hall
walkers and their tracks for joggers.
• The athletic facilities on the University at Buffalo’s North and South campuses offer recreation memberships at $20 per month, $82 per semester or $189 per year, according to Marcus Hutchins, UB director of recreation and intramural services. Special aerobic and indoor cycling passes are also available. UB fitness facilities include indoor pools, indoor track, racquetball and tennis courts, sauna and steam room.
• Alumni Arena’s Pro Shop offers equipment rentals including rackets, bats and balls for free upon presentation of a valid identification card or recreation permit. A new cardio fitness center in Alumni Arena features deluxe equipment plus cable television. Bring your headphones! For more information on Alumni Arena, call 645-2286. For Clark Hall, 829- 2926. Or e-mail ub-recreation@buffalo.edu . • Starpoint High School is just one school opening its outdoor track to district residents for use after school hours and athletic events/practices (approximately 6 p. m. until dusk) seven days a week.
• Hall hiking is also encouraged in Starpoint district school buildings between 6:30 and 9 p. m. Monday through Friday. Identification badges are required and can be obtained by calling 210-2352.
