The Buzz
Political peas in a pod
Ever since he headed up Hornell’s Young Republicans, strip club mogul Rick Snowden has had his picture taken with the coolest people. Nelson Rockefeller, Norman Schwarzkopf, Henry Kissinger, Caspar Weinberger. Buzz’s brother George had his picture taken once with Weinberger, too, but whereas George was wearing his Buffalo Bills No. 12 Joe Ferguson jersey, Snowden sported a natty suit. He knew how to do it. Snowden’s Web site, where you can see these pix, also shows shots of his new estate outside Nashville, Tenn., called — hee hee — Tally Ho Farms. (Do they practice strip cropping?) But the best pic of him is this one — with our own Rep. Brian Higgins. As peas in a pod, they get our vote.
Bridge of sighs
With our new microbeach and our Erie Canal Slip, Buffalo’s waterfront is catching up to Tonawanda’s. Its best feature: the Skyway, arching overhead. On what planet is it necessary to remove this bridge? It’s not in the way. We see cars going over it. Removing it would cost a fortune. Most importantly, Seattle has a Skyway. Don’t we want what Seattle has? Let’s complete our waterfront development the right way, with the Skyway as its jewel. As one admirer remarked: “That’s our signature bridge.”
It’s a gas
Quick, what’s the lovelier sight — blue Lake Erie or blue boat owners, putting their yachts up for sale cheap because of the high gas prices? High gas prices are not all bad. Not only do they bring yachts into the average person’s price range, but they perk up our commute. Every trip, for Buzz, has become a challenge not to step on the gas or the brakes. We just want to coast through life, thank you. Other people are carpooling. Digging into fries on the patio at Papa Jake’s, we looked across the street and saw the dancers from the Neglia Ballet troop out of their studio in the old Pierce-Arrow plant and pile into a van. About 50 of these lean, mean dancing machines fit into one van! We should do that, too. Unfortunately, these fries are still a bargain …
Feeling the heat
Summer has started. The trip with friends to Sunset Bay. The annual flirtation with renting a cottage there. The stop at the Rez so our guy pals could find — yecch — rum-flavored Dutch Masters. Being tossed around on the waves — the water was great — and later, sleeping like a toddler, with the electric fan oscillating, sand in our bed. Finally, that ubiquitous Buffalo summer sight: Tattoos! Down by Buffalo’s concrete lighthouse, we saw a wedding party with tattooed bride and tattooed bridesmaids. Buzz has always been too chicken even to get our ears pierced. We will never fit in.
The buzz
Hot enough for you? We knew one day we would hear the wind chill, only in reverse. And Monday — bingo! On WBEN-AM, we heard: “It’s 89 degrees, but it feels like 93.”
